Me and my wife had a small business together were we sold items on Amazon. It still exists, but is nowadays inactive. However, we still need to do the accounting of the few vouchers that still happens!
While we were active I used Visma eEkonomi (nowadays Spiris), but the monthly cost felt excessive for a company that doesn't do any real business anymore. I was also interested in using something Open Source.
Unfortunately it turns out that the Swedish market is very limited, more or less all options are paid online options. But, after quite a bit of looking around I found the old software Fribok. It was created when the accounting suite JFS Bokföring was released as open source when the original company JFS Bokföring did not want to continue developing it. (Such a great move! Lots of admiration for them)
The development of Fribok is, and has been for a long time, very very slow, not completely dead, but almost. Since I couldn't even get it to run without a lot of trial and error, I had the idea to try and see if I could do some improvements myself. Its written in Java, something I'm not interested in. But maybe an AI could do most of the work?
It turns out yes, and AI can work quite well within Fribok's codebase. It has so far been doing a lot of things actually! Since my changes are quite extensive, and Fribok itself is a very stable product I felt it best to hard fork, and Bokfri was born.
I think the future of Bokfri is still very open, but at least I now use it for my own fairly limited accounting needs.
